We have two goals: increase the number of people who bike, walk and use transit, while cutting the number of crashes in half.
Our roads should prioritize and protect those that are most vulnerable – pedestrians, bicyclists, children and seniors. Many times these populations are not able to drive – due to age, physical ability or income. Biking and walking can be their only options; street conditions and driver behavior must ensure that they can do so safely and easily.
An Active Transportation Alliance report and analysis gives us a clearer picture of crashes in Northeast Illinois.
Crashes are no accident. With stepped-up enforcement, improved street design and increased education, we can bring these numbers down.
